Hikes & Nature Spots

1. Captain Cook Monument Trail (Kaʻawaloa Trail)

  • Description: A 3.8-mile round-trip hike descending 1,300 feet to Kealakekua Bay, offering opportunities for snorkeling and historical exploration.

  • Distance from BIR: Approximately 8 miles.

2. Kaloko Cloud Forest Trail (Makaula- 'O'oma Trail )

  • Description: A 4-mile loop through the Honuaʻula Forest Reserve, showcasing native Hawaiian flora in a cool, shaded environment.

  • Distance from BIR: Approximately 14 miles.

3. Makalawena Beach Trail

  • Description: A 30 minute hike to one of the best white sand beaches on the Big Island known for Monk Seal sightings.

  • Distance from BIR: Approximately 17 miles.

4. Kiholo Bay Trail

  • Description: about 4 miles round trip, A scenic coastal hike leading to tranquil turquoise tidepools where freshwater meets the sea, perfect for a relaxing beach day and spotting sea turtles amid swaying palm trees.

  • Distance from BIR: Approximately 35 miles.

5. Pu'u Wa'a Wa'a Cinder Cone State Park

  • Description: An easy hike up this unique “jello-like” cinder cone, once home to an obsidian mine and still part of a working ranch, with panoramic views of Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Hualalei, and North Kohala.

  • Distance from BIR: Approximately 24 miles.
