Big Island Retreat is consistently rated as one of Hawaii’s top places to stay by our guests!

“Big Island Retreat is the perfect home away from home. It has a superbly clean and relaxed feel, tons of amenities, and Gigi, the Property Manager, is the best you will find anywhere! TRULY!”

“Personal, yet private oasis”

Honeymooning on various Hawaiian islands can leave you at danger of slipping into the air conditioned and homogenised atmospheres of huge resorts and experiencing nothing of true Island life; so it was great to experience the gentle ministration of our host, “Gigi” at her Big Island Retreat. She took the time to find out what we aimed to experience on “her” Island and made sure to check in with us every evening of our stay to see how how day exploring had measured up to her recommendations and our own Wishlist.

We were greeted by the sight of a three storey plantation house encompassed by breezy “lanai” verandas and the low key welcome by the proprietor, a diminutive and spunky woman who loves surfing and has made the island of Hawai‘i her home.

Our room had all the amenities of a top notch guest room at a friend’s home with charming patchwork quilts styled in the traditional Hawaiian arts and craft, and enormous and comfy four poster bed and a small ensuite bathroom and the convenience of a well equipped kitchenette and full sized fridge.

Those feeling more social can opt to cook in the outdoor gourmet kitchen overlooking the picturesque bay at the bottom of the hill. We did both. Gigi provides a well stocked complimentary fridge so a cold glass of wine or beer was always appreciated as the sun began to set.

If you want heavy towelling bathrobes and mints on your pillow, this establishment is not for you, but if a carefully curated gift basket of local delicacies running the gamut of fresh pineapple to coffee and chocolate encased Macadamia nuts and fresh papaya and the best local guide book, then the Big Island Retreat will serve as your perfect base for adventure laden Hawai‘i.

WHAT GUESTS ARE SAYING ABOUT US

“Loved staying at The Big Island Retreat”

We recently spent seven nights at The Big Island Retreat (BIR) and loved it. It is where we will stay when we visit Kailua-Kona. You can look at the pictures on the website to get a feel for the rooms and the grounds - they represent it well. The place has a serenity that few places have. A relaxed pace - definitely on "Hawaii time". The heart and soul of BIR is Gigi - the manager - and her staff. They are unobtrusive but there when you need them. The rooms and the grounds are immaculate. The rooms do not have A/C but do have a ceiling fan and an oscillating fan - we did not miss the A/C. Our room was very comfortable and nicely decorated - loved the traditional Hawaiian quilt on the bed. This was our 5th visit to the Big Island and our first time not staying at one of the big hotels north of the airport (Waikoloa area). The BIR was a delightful change from the big hotels. We'll be back...

“Looking forward to returning!”

My husband and I spent three nights at BIR and we concur with all of the positive comments already noted. This is a quaint, cozy location and GiGi is the ideal host. The grounds are immaculate, our room was beautiful and the location is perfect. We stayed in the Seaside room and had a view of the ocean from our lanai. The bed and pillows were the most comfortable I ever experienced (disclaimer, I am a bed/pillow snob, often complain about poor sleep when traveling). I have rarely felt so welcomed or relaxed when traveling, BIR is ideal!

This place was amazing!

We had such a pleasant stay here. The retreat was a sight for sore eyes after spending the previous 2 nights in a tent. We loved the tranquility of the space. We camped for a few nights while on the island to get away from people, but we found just as much seclusion and serenity at the retreat. We really enjoyed borrowing all the available beach gear, as we packed extremely light. When we come back to the Island, we will definitely stay here again.

"Convenient, comfortable and complete "

This Bed and Breakfast ( guests make both) has a convenient location near the beach and shopping center, the rooms are spacious and comfortable with the capability to make meals in addition to an outside communal kitchen to also cook meals, and offers complete amenities such as beach chairs and umbrellas, snorkeling gear, portable coolers, and washer and dryer. Gigi, our hostess, is a wealth of information and very accommodating to any need. We especially enjoyed the songbirds in the morning.

Small and intimate

Great little oasis, family type atmosphere. Gigi is an amazing manager, she's a real gem. Found our room very warm with no air conditioning, but a lot of the rooms get the ocean breeze so that's great. Overall, it was awesome

This was the perfect location for our visit to Kona. Centrally located, clean, well equipped. We'll definitely be back. They had coolers, snorkels, beach chairs (and more) available to borrow for our adventures.
